We’re baack!

Hey Family,

We’re baaack! We took a bit of a vacation over the summer to travel, work in our garden (see the latest pics here and on Facebook) and to spend time with family and recharge! Now that fall is in full swing and the children are back in school, we wanted to give you a few tips on packing school lunches. We want to give our kids enough vitamins and nutrients in their lunches to keep them powered up to learn throughout the day and on into their after school activities. My daughter is playing soccer now and we are giving her extra fruit and a protein bar with her lunch so she has a healthy snack before practices. It’s that easy folks!  Just a little prep is involved and the kids are set!

Check out some of these lunch ideas below and stay tuned for a new teaching on healthful eating coming soon!

  • 1.       Homemade pizza and carrot sticks with hummus
  • 2.       Pita pocket filled with salad or tuna plus an apple and a few Hersey kisses (dark chocolate is good for us and curbs the sweet tooth)
  • 3.       Homemade vegetable soup in a thermos, side salad with balsamic and olive oil dressing, plus a piece of fruit
  • 4.       5 bean crock pot chili, fruit and 4 gingersnaps
  • 5.       Chicken salad, gluten free crackers, fruit salad and some popcorn

Recipes for some of these ideas and more can be found here: http://www.cookinglight.com/food/lunch-box-recipes-kids

FOOOOD FIGHT!!!

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
                                                                                                      Book of Ephesians 6:12 (NASB)

As a young city boy growing up in the hood (North Philly), I used to throw a fit when my mother would send me and my sister Pam to visit my grandmother in Washington, North Carolina, affectionately known as “Lil Washington.”  Lil Washington was a place of no public transportation, dirt roads and no sidewalks. The highlight of my visit was getting a cheese hot dog and Dr. Pepper soda from the diner my grandmother worked at called Pop Craters (at least that’s what I thought it was called). I remember one time it rained so hard that the water came up to the porch. When the rain stopped, the neighborhood kids swam in the muddy water…YUCK!

Now, 40+ years later, I find my spirit longing for that place of dirt roads and past ancestors. Now, living in an area of horn honking, constant sirens and consistently delayed public transportation my cry has become “I want a farm” every time I get to experience rudeness, incompetence and a flat out I don’t give a damn about no one but myself attitude. My soul constantly cries out “I want a farm!”
In my mind, a farm is a place of solace where we can commune with nature, grow our own food supply and live life how the creator intended us to live as self-sufficient stewards of the Earth. After all, sacred text says that God placed (wo)man in the Garden and supplied them with everything they needed, did it not?

Now here’s another reason I want a farm:

I recently came across an article entitled “Monsanto seeks merger with Syngenta to control more than 35% of the worlds seed supply.” If you’re unfamiliar with Monsanto and or Syngenta these are two of the top three companies that control the world’s seed supply, the very seed that is used to plant the fruits and vegetables that you consume every day. No one entity should wield this much power over your food supply and the way folks eat you are practically begging to become sick slaves again. Remember, slavery wasn’t about race, it was initially about economics and still is….believe that! Monsanto and Syngenta as well as the other agribusiness companies want to be your god (with a little g) they’re already your source of food and medicine. That’s right, these two agrochemical companies that decided to get into the food business are most likely on their way to becoming partners in crime against humanity. So far, Syngenta has turned down Monsanto’s bid of $45 billion dollars (yep I said billion) Monsanto wants the merger so bad that they offered Syngenta $2 billion dollars if the merger doesn’t go through.

Family, these devils aren’t playing and we need to stop playing too. Educate yourselves and make some lifestyle changes, support your local farmers that are not in bed with these rulers of darkness. Grow your own vegetables! Look, I live in a townhouse outside of Washington, D.C. and I have started a garden on my deck, preparing for the day when we can proudly proclaim “we got our farm.”

This is the link to one of many articles on the subject:

Here’s a picture of the garden on da deck….give it a minute!

If there is a local farmer’s market in your area, shoot me the name and location so I can share it with our readers!

DO YOU WANT YOUR 120?

There are 3 types of people in the world….those that watch things happen, those that make things happen and those that ask what happened!

Some of the comments and questions directed my way concerning the concept of living to age 120 are really interesting! Some people say…

“I don’t think the bible meant that literally…”

And

“I would love to get my 120 if it is Gods will…”

Some people seem to hate good news , ask Jesus!

To these folks I say “don’t focus on the number, but the process!”

I wanted to do this blog to encourage people to maximize their full potential in life. I don’t want anyone to waste days because as we all know, tomorrow is not promised!

So what I want to know is what are you doing to get your 120?

Have you changed your diet, begun to exercise more, changed jobs or just decided to spend more quality time with your loved ones? See, all these things add years to your life and allow your whole self to be more balanced.

Life is all about balance. It is so easy to get caught up in the rat race. We get up, sit in traffic, go to work, sit in more traffic, go home, watch TV for a few hours and then go to bed. Over and over and over this is our routine, (whew that’s enough of that).

It took me two weeks to write another entry for this blog, because I had so many things pulling me in different directions, but the main one was the dreaded 9-5 or in my case the 9-6.

In December of 2014, I decided I had to make a change in my work schedule for the betterment of my spiritual, mental and physical health.  I was allowed to go to a four-day work week by my employer (thank you)! We live in a society that has a seven day week and the thought of me giving up five of my precious days to work and only having two for my family (and me) just did not seem right! So, now I work four days a week with Monday off.  Having Monday off was important to me since it is pretty much the beginning of a normal (or abnormal), depending upon your perspective, work week. Yes, there are some financial ramifications for my decision, but for me working on Monday wasn’t going to make me a financially wealthy man. Working four days instead of five has allowed me to focus more on my family, health and fulfilling my passions. I often get asked “what started me on this journey to 120? When I look back on the last year, I believe that was the beginning. I didn’t know it then, but I see it know.

So, I ask my question again… “What are you doing to get your 120?”

Another decision I made to help me get my 120 was to become a Youngevity distributor.  I am a user and distributor of this wonderful, effective nutrition line. Check it out here kevinq.youngevity.com

10 BAD FOODS YOU SHOULD NEVER EVER EAT!!!

A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it.

-Max Planck

Peace and Blessings,

As I was doing research to make sure I could use the “Journey to 120” name for the blog, I found out that there are other Journey to 120 blogs. The difference is that those blog author' are chronicling their journey to 120lbs and I am chronicling the journey to living 120 years! I applaud and salute these efforts to be healthier and happier. With that being said those who were looking for these blogs are also in the right place! Proper nutrition is a key component in any weight loss and exercise plan. You can lose or gain all the weight you would like, but without proper nutrition you are sliding down a slippery slope to chronic and or acute disease.

This brings me to my next point...don’t shoot the messenger.

These are 10 bad foods you need to stay away from. Remember, an optimal well-balanced life takes time and patience, watch the video from one of my mentors, Dr. Peter Glidden Naturopathic Physician with 25+ years of experience.

Stop eating these 10 foods or die!

1.           Wheat

2.           Barley

3.           Rye

4.           Oats

Why? Whole grains contain the protein gluten which is difficult for the stomach acid to break down.

5.           Fried foods.

Why? Frying foods releases the chemical Acrylamide, a known carcinogen and inflammation causing agent! FYI…Inflammation is the root of all evil!

6.           Cooking Oil

Why?  Cooking oil causes oxidative damage to the skin and cells (similar to how rust affects a car)

7.           Carbonated beverages (with or before a meal)

Why? CO2 (the chemical that makes the bubbles) neutralizes stomach acid and inhibits the digestive process.

8 and 9.        Well-done red meat and Crunchy skins of bake potatoes, yams and or sweet potatoes

Why? Both release a chemical called Heterocyclic Amines which cause cancer

     10.         Nitrates

Why?  Often added to meats for preservation, when cooked turn into Nitrosamines which causes….you guessed it, cancer. Whole foods sells meat that are nitrate free.

Check out Dr. Glidden’s video and do the research and help yourself, your family and friends. Don’t be a human ATM machine for the medical institutions and Big Pharma.

BTW…I am a Youngevity representative, if you would like to find out more about the products and or the business, contact me via email at ourjourneyto120@gmail.com or call me at 410-961-7475

Have a great life on your Journey to 120

New Genesis

A new birth has been borne in my Spirit in order to achieve the God given right of optimal life balance and wholeness.

Taken from the sacred scriptures in Genesis 6:3 the Spirit of the Divine Creator decreed that “My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal, their days will be a hundred and twenty years."

In the text the decree comes during the time of increased wickedness on the earth, similar to the times we are experiencing now (i.e sickness, crime lack of love from one man to another) and out of extreme dissatisfaction of the Divine Creator (God) towards the Divine Creature (you and I).

Now, most theologians, teachers and preachers would take this opportunity to spread the unforgiving and hopeless message of doom & gloom, but for me it is manifesting in an altogether different way. Genesis 6:3 is about motivation and inspiration, of a new awakening, a cleansing and washing away of old ideologies that destroy us spiritually, mentally and physically and separates us from each other and inhibits our ability to love.

Goddesses and Gods, let the awakening manifest itself in what I like to call the “JOURNEY TO 120: A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO THE OPTIMIZATION OF LIFE-BALANCE.”

In this blog, we will be sharing our personal journeys, chronicling everything pertaining to a natural and healthy lifestyle including nutrition, being active and creating peace in our homes, neighborhoods and workplaces. I will even go off on a tangent or two about why we need to pick the trash up in our neighborhoods (which is a real pet peeve of mine!)

For those of you who will take time out of your lives to read these entries, view the videos etc., I pray that you won’t be just readers partners with us in our “JOURNEY TO 120.”
